Sony's next Portable

My 6th Sense is feeling some disturbance in the Force, I believe that in fact Sony will announce a new Portable PlayStation this year on E3 or on TGS (most probably this one), if it becomes true (I really wish it does), what you guys think it should be called and why?

I think it should be called just PSP, or The all new PlayStation Portable...

I think one of the biggest mistakes of the Vita was it's own name, instead of calling it PSP 2 or something that reminds the original, they used a "nonsense" name. Other things are the use of too much gimmick controls on 1st and 2nd party titles and of course the lack of proper exposure as RyouBakura mentioned...

Yeah, agree, the Vita name really never caught on for me.  I used it more as a Mobile device than a gaming device because I was jealous of my friends with the iPod touches.  Most people seem to think the outrageously priced memory cards did it in though.  Special memory cards were a freaking spear in the wallet.  Sony seemed to be more interested in protecting the integrity of the system more so than making games.  The whole touch screen thing was NEVER appealing to me even on phones either.

(I can't say my PSP fared any better, since I used it as a music player and only played 2 games on it.  Sony just seems to aim the bar too high when trying to get portable!)

In my opinion, Sony is going to have to try to compete with the Switch portable gimmick soon or lose the battle.  I'm lucky if my Vita can even stay connected to the PS4 most of the time.  My crappy Sony streaming media player has a better connection. The 3DS had crappy gimmicky 3D, but still sold very well and Nintendo fixed their mistakes, made new portables, and sell them 2-3 more times...  Vita did one remake of their system only to downgrade the screen, so we have nerds bragging about their "OLED" while new buyers get spurned.

Nintendo's marketing is amazing, and they have years old beloved mascots from the 80s and 90s like Kirby, Donkey Kong, Samus, Zelda, Link, Mario etc. to back up the system when it's in trouble.  What does Sony have when it comes to lovable characters?  Not much..I really don't identify the Sony system with any characters.  Sony needs to wake up and get some mascots to draw in fans.  I played so many Sony games, but they all seem separate from the system.

There doesn't seem to be any unity.  Sony should use Persona characters as a start, I think!  Gravity Rush's Katt is getting popular too, they need to do more with her.  Games are played out and die off, characters last forever.  They need to spam their popular characters more and make a face for themselves.  When you connect to Nintendo Shop, you see Yoshi, Peach, Mario, etc. in your face, the Faces of Nintendo.  People love to love fantasy characters! (like I love Toki my avatar hehe).  So you're right, Nintendo marketing is amazing.  It has "CHARM".  Sony has no charm!  I'm saying this as a Sony fan.

What if the timed exclusivity of Crash N.sane Trilogy isn't for an outside console, but for an inside Portable, that would be nuts...

Some of the game series that made the PSP famous were not on Vita, that's a great mistake too: Daxter, Locoroco, Patapon, Pursuit Force, every GTA and especially the Monster Hunter main series...

Uncharted for the Vita were only a gimmicks game...

I believe that counting on 1st party, the games that did it really well were Wipeout, LBP and Tearaway.

If they do make another portable they should:

They should do away with the gimmicks and the propietary memory cards. They should also keep online free and do the obvious thing of upping their system specs.

Also get other games besides JRPG's or Indie stuff, and since Sony has a cozy relationship with the COD guys (forgot their name) they should also get another exclusive. Preferably one that has the zombies mode (that thing has a lotta fans) also MP. Wishful thinking but if they could also get some sort of backwards compatibility that lets you play PSX, PS2, PS3 (probably impossible since the ps3 was a pain to program for or so i heard), PSP and Vita and it's ez $ -pepesmile-

Well... PSP certainly will, PSX with it, but i think they don't want the risk of an TN-V or Adrenaline again, so they will build a brand new one.

They could port the PS2 EMU from ps4, do it for arm systems would be a pain but they have the tools and money to do it.

Vita would be harder, and i don't think they really care about this one.

I don't know, I still think the main problem was advertising.

The console has so much games that are of huge interest to me, and made me want to buy it. But there is absolutely no place of a 100km radius that sells anything PS Vita besides the same 5 games I see everywhere (Tearaway, MGS collection, Little Big Planet, Freedom Wars, NFS). On the other hand, Nintendo doesn't even SUPPORT my region and we still get a higher variety of 3DS games, albeit more expensive, and this whole PAL/NTSC fiasco. All of this is because NOBODY had a Vita so game sellers didn't care for it. I want Person 4! ;_;

Then there's also the people that had a PSP and didn't even know another console came out after it.

And yes, I concur on the memory card problem. Though in my current situation I'm actually willing to pay for an overpriced memory card, since they are impossible to find.

The only reason I have a vita is because I spent $50 to repair a broken one. And then another $50 to buy a damn memory card. Also I'd never get one if I couldn't pirate on it -- the sony experience is just getting mugged and they come back for more.

What about a portable PS3? I mean for there PSN now service they use special "server" versions of PS3's that are designed with lower power consumption in mind. So because PS Now is becoming more and more defunct, I think sony should squash together a PS3 into a handheld and slap a new sticker on it and sell it as a PSX/PSP/PS2/PSVITA/PS3 compatable device. Picture the size of the game library, that would be focken huge and probably destroy the switch. And don't tell me it is not possible because most of the space on the PS3 is used by the Blueray and the HDD and other useless shit.
Oh Give it a Slick as f**k name like xbox did, call it the playstation.

There are two factors that really remove this idea from the blackboard, one is that they would need to remake all the pieces to be able fit it in a small device, also reprogram everything and change the midia format to cartridge... Second is that was a pain to develop to the PS3 because of it's ridiculous archtecture called Cell, should be much more easier to develop for the Switch and that is a minus for the New Sony Portable.

2 more things is that the PS3 is much weaker than the Switch in specs, and from what i remember the PS3 had some PS2 pieces inside of the system (correct me if i'm wrong), this was due to the PS2 "emulation", this demand size and that is also a minus... the PS3 can't properly emulate (Software emulation) PS2, it is too weak to handle it.

"Vita" in italian means "Life", i think they used this name cause it's a "portable" console and u can use it wherever u are in everyday life. And don't forget about the useless 3G function. (it's just my personal opinion).

An adapter to use micro-sd with ps vita would be really awesome.

I wish the next sony portable console will not use those useless and overpriced memory cards.. Why should i buy a 64gb sony memory card for 120€, when for the same price i can buy a 2tb hard disk.. It just doesn't make sense.

I don't see Sony making a new portable console in a at least a decade, here are my reasons:

1Nintendo's 3Ds just smashed the vita sales, probably sony regrets the vita launch.
2I saw a news a long time ago that making games for the vita is kinda expensive, hence most of vita games are not what they could be, this could only scale more in a new console since Sony looks uninterested in making efforts to sell things, eve if this is a more dev related issue it only gets worse.
3The psp had a nice fight with the DS but again the DS smashed the PSP because it had better games, there is no point in making a powerhouse and not using it's power, vita suffers from the same issue, no point in paying for a more powerful console and having graphics like the low end console, look at star ocean on psp! You could get just the same result on a DS!
4Maybe they have learned the lesson with their stupid vitaOnlysdcards, if they again launch a new console and do the same they are risking things here.
5Porting games to the table console is only a faster way to bury your console, sony made this stupid mistake in the same way microgarbage made the xbox content on the pc which kills the idea of buying and xbox. Toukiden, digimon i can name a few games that are not PS4 games but just vita ports, which sux, who buys a ps4 to play vita on the tv?! God i hate bandai.

Don't get me wrong i would love a nice competition against the 3DS and so on but no one wants to enter in the fight, the only reason the PSP did not ended like the dreamcast was because it got hacked pretty soon and it became a very handy gaming device after that, even the vita is now somewhat popular because it got hacked.

Wells Sony pretty much confirmed that they won't compete with the Switch

To quote from above

Quote

“The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid device, thus it has a completely different strategy from the PlayStation,” House said. “We are focusing our attention on making products that can be played in the living room. We do not see big potential in the handheld market.”

Well no switch like hybrid thing but still no idea about a normal handheld. But from what they said i wouldn't wait for anything soon.

I do not agree with the majority of your opinion...

1- No they don't, they regret launching it the way it got launched, specially the name and the SD thing...

2- Thats not true, in fact it is so easy that Indie devs still launch their titles on it just because of this...

3- DS had lots of childish and/or simple games while the PSP had console quality games on the go, lots of huge exclusives and thats why i bough it, not because of piracy, a lot of people did too. Example: the best selling Monster Hunter game of all time is in it, for it and it is a japan exclusive... (A simple search on VG chartz

4- They deserve to burn in hell because of this...

5- They did this after the vita already was "dead", but it is dumb idea anyway...

Yes i can find reasoning on your response. The vgchartz have a lot of data maybe i found the wrong games at the wrong time huh. I did trade my psp for a DS because i found better use for pokemon games, a few RPGs and the rockman ZX series, but in the end i bought a new psp because Gundam Vs Gundam had so much quality work in it. This makes me wonder even more how could the vita fail with that much potential in their hands? I know some people talked about a few AAA titles having framerate issues but i never noticed this on most of mine games at least.
